ENERGY STORAGE Deregulation of the
U.S. electric power industry, while creating significant challenges for
utilities, has created a variety of new product opportunities relating
to power quality and distributed assets. Complementary to participation
in the high-voltage distributed generation market, the technological edge
in coil production, superconductivity and resistive magnetics has positioned
Everson Tesla for strong participation in both flywheel and magnetic energy
storage. From the early development of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems under the sponsorship of the Department of Energy, Everson Tesla has contributed its expertise in design, tooling, material selection, and project management to provide conductor and coil configuration options that meet the stringent high field power and strength requirements of these massive stored energy systems. In support of current commercial development of medium and large SMES units, Everson Tesla demonstrated the capability to produce kilometer lengths of stainless jacketed Cable-in Conduit Conductor (CICC) utilizing both Niobium Titanium and Niobium Tin superconductors.
